The Orbera® Managed Weight Loss System

If you’re struggling with your weight, you might feel like you’re out of options. A healthy diet and consistent exercise haven’t gotten you to where you want to be, but you either don’t want to have or are not qualified for weight loss surgery.

At Advanced Surgeons, we can offer you another path: a gastric balloon procedure.

The Orbera® Managed Weight Loss System

The Orbera Managed Weight Loss System is a two-part procedure that helps patients lose up to 3.1 times more weight than diet and exercise alone. First, a gastric balloon is placed in your stomach and inflated to about the size of a grapefruit. This takes up room in your stomach, which helps you eat smaller meals. You’ll also get diet and lifestyle coaching from our team of experts.

You’ll have the Orbera in your stomach for six months, enough time to engrain your new eating habits and patterns. At the end of the six months, the balloon will be removed. Your coaching will continue for another six months.

Are You an Orbera Candidate?

To be considered for the Orbera system, you must:

  • Be an adult
  • Be willing to participate in a managed weight loss program
  • Have a body mass index (BMI) between 30 and 40

The Orbera system is a great choice for those who do not want permanent weight loss surgery, or for those who do not qualify. Most bariatric surgical procedures mandate a BMI of 40, or 35 with weight-related conditions like type 2 diabetes or heart disease. For those of a BMI between 30 and 35, or lower than 40 without comorbid conditions, Orbera can help you get your weight to a healthy level.

How Orbera Works

The procedure to both insert and remove the balloon is quick, lasting 20 to 30 minutes. It is an outpatient procedure, meaning no hospital stay is necessary. Weight loss happens quickly, with the majority occurring just three months after the balloon is placed.

The balloon is inflated with saline to about the size of a grapefruit, large enough to take up room in your stomach. The goal is to prevent you from overeating and to help you feel full on less food. After six months, the balloon is deflated and removed.

Should You Get Orbera?

The Orbera system is an excellent choice for those who do not want or cannot have bariatric surgery. It has been used more than 220,000 times and is FDA-approved.
